Darts checkout chart

In short

Apart from seven exceptions, there is a suggested finish for every score from 170 down to 2, and 170 is the highest a visit of three darts can take out: treble 20, treble 20, bullseye. In 501 as in 301 the last dart has to land in a double, the centre counting as a double 25. Even scores up to 40 go out with one dart, while those seven scores, the bogey numbers, are beyond any three darts.

Each row gives one reliable route, chosen to leave the most comfortable double it can. Other combinations exist: if you have a double you trust, keep it. The chart holds for every X01 game: a score finishes the same way in 301, 501 or 701.

The bogey numbers

These 7 scores are the only ones below 170 that no combination of three darts can finish:

So you do not go for the finish: you score, and leave yourself something checkable. On 169, two treble 20s leave 49 — a third dart in the single 17 leaves 32, the D16 the chart itself leaves you.

The doubles to work on

Most of your finishes will go through a handful of doubles. Practise these first:

D20
D16
D8
D12
D10
BULL

D16 is the professionals' favourite: miss it into the single 16 and you are left with 16, which is D8, and missing that leaves 8, which is D4. A clean chain of doubles all the way down.

Frequently asked questions about checkouts

What is the highest checkout in darts?▼

170: T20, T20, bullseye. It is the highest score you can finish from in three darts, and players call it the big fish.

What are the bogey numbers?▼

The only scores below 170 that no combination of three darts can finish: 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. On one of those you throw to set yourself up rather than to finish.

Which double should you go for?▼

D20 and D16 are the most played, because missing into the single leaves a score still divisible by two. Miss D16 and you are left with 16, which is D8; miss that and you are left with 8, which is D4.

Do you have to finish on a double?▼

In 501 and 301 as they are normally played, yes — and the bullseye counts as a double 25. Master out, which also allows a treble, and straight out, which allows any number, are the other two rules; you pick one in the advanced settings when you create a game. A game starts in straight out by default, so choose double out to play the chart above.
